Hesperides
Stoneware with glazes, turmeric, paprika and coffee
26 x 4 x 4 inches, 7 x 24 x 4 inches, 8 x 4 x 4 inches
2018

In this sculptural group Shakti (female power) is highlighted, by referencing Hesperides, the Greek goddesses of the sunset. The three organic forms are colored with turmeric, paprika and coffee, post-firing, and gilded on the inside with gold-leaf. Turmeric is a potent anti-inflammatory indigenous to South Asia, coffee has its origins on the continent of Africa, and Paprika was introduced to the world from the Americas as a result of the Colombian exchange. My interest in formal elements (as well as the interplay of inside vs outside, geometric vs organic and monochrome vs color) is used to underscore the complexity of personal identity, migration and cross-cultural exchanges.
